"The Mother of the Forest" was an ancient and huge Giant Sequoia. 321 ft tall, 90ft at ground-level, 2,520 years old, and covered in bark 2 ft thick, the tree was stripped in 1852 by its discoverer George Gale and quickly perished. Its fire-blackened snag, over 100 ft tall, still stands today in Calaveras, CA.
